To introduce the student to the methods of vector analysis, both theory and applications.

Knowledge and understanding

For a passing grade the student must

- know the basic theory and be able to apply it to physical problems.
- be able to use suitable coordinate systems to solve problems with various geometry.

Competences and skills

For a passing grade the student must

- be able to analyze and solve problems in vector analysis.
- be able to analyze simple physical problems and find a mathematical description of these.

Judgement and approach

For a passing grade the student must

come to an understanding of the relation between the mathematical model and the physical reality.

Scalar and vector fields. Gradient and divergence. Surface integrals and the divegence theorem. Applications to heat conduction and electrical currents. Spherical and cylindrical coordinates. Curl and Stokes theorem. Potentials and singular fields.

Grading scale: TH

Assessment: Written exam.

Required prior knowledge: FMA420 Linear Algebra, FMAA05 Calculus in One Variable, FMA430 Calculus in Severable Variables, FMEA05 Engineering Mechanics - Statics and Particle Dynamics, FMEA20 Mechanics - Dynamics.
