Contents

Statics: Moment and force systems in two and three dimensions. Equivalent force systems. Free-body diagrams and equilibrium. Virtual work. Applications of equilibrium equations on material bodies and parts of bodies. Point forces, distributed forces, external and internal forces. Center of mass and center of gravity. Friction. Applications such as for example frames, machines, beams and hydrostatics.

Dynamics: Newton’s laws. Kinematics and kinetics of particles in straight and curved motion. Cartesian, natural and polar coordinates. Energy and work. Momentum and angular momentum. Impulse and angular impulse. Impact. Newton´s laws, kinematic s and kintetics for particle systems and rigid bodies in fixed axis rotation. Moment of inertia. Vibrations of damped and undamped mechanical systems. Free and forced vibrations. Particle movement and rigid body vibration. Eigen frequencies, resonance and relative damping.  

Examination details

Grading scale: TH
Assessment: Two written exams, one for each part of the course. The written exam for part one is preceded by voluntary dugga. The dugga-result may be used to complement the result of the current regular written exam of part one. The final grade of the course is calculated by weighting the grades form the two parts of the course in relation to the course credits.
