Aim
The course is intended to provide fundamental knowledge of
production technique in road construction. On completion of the
course the student should be familiar with the planning and
implementation of different road projects and how various
interested parties influence the process.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- Describe the most frequent geological materials and their
characteristics.
- Explain and use fundamental concepts in soli mechanics and
road construction.
- Describe the differences between different contract forms and
purchases.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- Apply a knowledge of soil mechanics in infrastructural
projects.
- Carry out production plans, time and resource plans for
different road structures and the preparation of a tender.
- Draw up a work plan for a standard asphalt surface and evaluate
the materials’ properties in terms of the established
requirements according to prevailing specifications.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
Understand the importance of common points in systematic
planning and implementation of available information for evaluating
the reliability of the results obtained.
Contents
- Different phases of the planning process with emphasis on
construction specifications
- Basic geology and soil characteristics
- Stresses and strains in the earth
- Contract forms. Procurement forms. Preparation of tenders.
Production planning
- Cost specification and tenders. Volume assessment.
Price-setting. Cost-benefit analysis
- Timetables. Planning of activities
- Control methods from subgrade to surface and quality
assurance
- Geotechnical investigations during the planning phase and
ongoing work
- Choice of surface layers. Criteria for choice of asphalt
surfaces
- Dimensioning of superstructures. Material properties
- Operation and maintenance of roads
Examination details
Grading scale: TH
Assessment: Students are examined both individually and in a collaborative group. The group examination is based on written group tasks. Individual exams, which include both theory and calculation, are written at the end of term.
