Aim

The course aims at introducing fundamental knowledge and understanding about strategies, terminology and methodology associated with product innovation and its sub-processes, the product renewal and the product development processes. The course also provides some basic understanding of the engineering design process, in the form of procedures, methods and techniques utilized in the concept development phase of the product development process. Students should also have acquired the ability to apply these skills in an industrial context. Furthermore, the student should also have acquired insights into the importance of product development in a manufacturing company with respect to its growth and success in the market place and its role and relevance to society's growth and wealth.

Contents

Based on a general model of the industrial development process for the development of products, the product innovation process, the course starts with introducing product planning or alternatively product renewal. ). As part of this process, a suitable portfolio of development projects is generated, based on the company’s product policy (itself derived from the company’s overall business goals and from a market analysis). In the subsequent part of the course the product development process, with an emphasis on the initial principle or, alternatively put, concept development phase, is introduced. The engineering design methodology, critical for the development process, is given in an overall perspective, with emphasis here laid on its use in the concept development phase. In the final part of the course, some of the latest research outcomes in the field of product development, such as radical innovation, are introduced. The students receive herewith a first insight into the research in product innovation.
Initially the theory of product renewal and product development is introduced, followed by an application project. The initial part of the project consists in the product renewal task and is performed, if possible, in cooperation with an industrial company. Alternatively the project is carried out within a virtual company, to provide the industry-oriented character of the project. The project is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. In the second part of the project, the concept development task, the students develop one of the product proposals derived from their product renewal project. The project is presented in the form of a group report, as well as orally by the entire team in front of the other teams and to the participating companies.

Assessment: The course includes a compulsory industrial project which is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. A passed project gives a score between 30 and 60 points. All group members receive the same number of points earned on the project. In addition, the students must pass an individual written examination thus earning a score of between 20 and 40 points. Note that the written exam is carried out during the course, after that the lectures on the theory have been taught. This is to secure that all students possess the theoretical knowledge necessary to successfully carry out the product development project. The accumulated points from the projects and the exam will result in the following final grades: 50-66 points - final grade 3; 67-84 points - final grade 4; 85-100 points - final grade 5.

Contents: The project is, if possible, carried out in cooperation with an industrial enterprise. Alternatively a fictive enterprise is utilized. The project is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. The project begins with a product renewal project, which aims at delivering a number product proposal. One of product proposals from the product renewal process is utilized within the subsequent product development process. In the product development process the team only carries out the conceptual development phase. All parts are presented in a common report and orally by all the group members in front of all other teams and of a representative of the collaborating company.
