The aim is to give students an integrated view on water as a
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
acquire the following knowledge and understanding:
- an integrated view on water as a natural resource
- the dependence of the aquatic environment on the structure and
use of the catchment area, the coupling land-lake-sea, and how the
hydrological cycle and nutrient status iare influenced by
- practical experience in solving water-environment problems by
integrated measures involving the entire catchment area and work
with water-quality data in a GIS environment
- knowledge about Swedish and international water management
- insight into the work of authorities and consultants working
with water management issues
- ability to communicate water-management problems and their
solutions orally and written
- a basis for further studies or employment in the limnological
field A grounding in further studies and professional roles within
the limnological area.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- ability to present water-environment problems and their
solution in written and oral form.
- hydrology and cycling of nutrients: Methods for measuring,
calculations, and applications. Interactions between catchment area
and aquatic ecosystems. Production of aquatic organisms in
freshwater, the Baltic and coastal marine areas, and the
exploitation of these resources by humans.
- water quality problems and their solutions are discussed,
especially concerning eutrophication, acidification, drainage of
land and water areas, damming and regulation of watercourses, the
discharge of municipal sewage effluents and process water from
industry, and future effects of climate change.
- current environmental legislation and agreements, water quality
and organism monitoring, analysis of environment problems, mapping
and inventories of catchment areas with proposals for long-term
- different applied measures to solve water quality problems:
lake restoration, biomanipulation, construction of wetlands and
liming. Fisheries management and goals. Treatment techniques for
drinking-water, stormwater and sewagewater.
- training in oral and written communication.
Grading scale: TH
Assessment: Assessment is both written and oral, on one hand a final written exam close to the end of the course, on the other written and oral project presentations. Students who fail the scheduled exam will have an opportunity to take another exam in close proximity to the ordinary one. In order to pass the course the student is required to have passed the test, have acceptable project reports and have actively participated in all compulsory course elements. The final grade for the course is determined by the combined results of the written final exam and the individual literature project.
