Aim

The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge about the properties of most building materials

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to identify the most common building materials
• know the desing, manufature and operation of the most common building materials

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to identify important demands in various environments and how these affect the materials
• be able to make reasonable material choices and to judge the consequences of these choices in various situations

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to discuss how the materials effect the environment, the achitechtual expression and the use of resurces.

Contents

The course contains material properties such as

• density and porosity
• heat and moisture related properties
• durability and service life
• properties during high temperatures
• testing
• material choice

The students perform two student experiments in groups of max four students. One experiment on casting concrete and one experiment concerning different processes such as thermal expansion and diffusion.
