Fundamental concepts, quantities and relations which are used for characterizing material, forces and deformations are explained. From real-life situations problems are defined and suitable models are chosen for a conceptual analysis of the problem. Examples of discussed concepts and quantities are mass, centre of gravity, stiffness, force, moment and equilibrium.

Assessment: Examination comprises three moments: two project tasks, which are presented orally, and a written exam. The final grade is based on the result from the written exam. In the two mandatory project tasks the students work in pairs and in groups of 4-5 students, respectively.
