Aim

The purpose of the course is to provide a general understanding of the necessity and possibility to plan and build factories and industrial plants with a high degree of flexibility and rational material flows, and to give the students some skills in the construction of industrial plants and to develop their understanding of technical, economic, environmental, safety and health, risk and legislative issues that can occur when constructing new and reconstructing old industrial plants.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to use theories, models and tools in order to participate in the work of planning, siting, designing and assessing rational industrial plants and
• be able to cooperate with different kinds of actors in the construction industry.

This means that the sudent shall:

• independently analyse internal production, material and administrative flows and to transform this information into floor space, factory building, and land demand
• understand the administrative, economic, legislative, environmental, health & safety issues that influence the planning and construction of industrial plants
• have knowledge of different kinds of production layout principles
• have knowledge of the construction process and its participating actors
• have knowledge of different kind of purchasing and contracting forms
• have knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations that influence the construction and renewal of industrial plants
• have an overall view of alternative factory building techniques and their advantages and disadvantages
• have a basic knowledge of project management
• have a basic knowledge of project risk assessment

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

independently be able to

• apply the Systematic Layout Planning method when planning industrial plants, offices and housing
• describe technical, environmental, safety and health demands for different kind of plants and premises
• calculate the area need for different kinds of plant facilities
• design layouts for production plants
• calculate the need for land area for a plant and areas for docking and transportation of goods to and from the industry
• apply methods for assessing alternative localizations and design of factories
• present an overall project time schedule with a critical path for the realization of an industrial plant construction project
• present a management report as support in the decision process of enlarging or moving the factory
• use reference literature and understand technical terms within the construction area
• identify and quantify risks in performing industrial plant projects

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to cooperate with architects, builders, venting, water & sewage and electrical engineers in an industrial plant realization project and thereby represent the interests of the production organization.

Contents

Industrial planning, strategic planning of premises, localization of industrial plants, design of working areas and industrial plants, systematic layout planning, layout principles, building techniques and materials, planning of the realization of industrial projects, participants in the construction process, authorities and legislation. A compulsory case study is performed as teamwork. The purpose of the case study is to handle different issues that can occur when planning and realizing industrial plant projects. A compulsory study visit may be included.

Assessment: Evaluation of course performance is based equally on the written examination and the case study.

Credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: A written examination consisting of about 15 questions is given, worth 60 points in all, and to pass the examination you must have 30 points. The examination is based on the compendium "Industriell anläggningsteknik" as well as some handouts and the lectures. You may use the compendium and the handouts when writing the exam. The evaluation of course performance is based equally on the written examination and the case study. Max points (for the examination and the case study together) are 120, and 60 points are needed to pass. The written examination as well as the case study must be passed individually to earn the final grade. Contents: Covers literature och lectures.

Credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: The assignment is evaluated and to pass you must achieve 30 points. Max points are 60. Contents: The assignment should be carried out by students in groups. The assignment is meant to solve different types of problems when constructing and designing buildings. Written report.
