Based on an overall procedure model of the industrial development process, the product innovation process, the course starts up by introducing Product planning or alternatively Product renewal. Within this process it is explained how the industrial enterprise, based on the business goal, market survey(s) and an overhaul of the product assortment, formulates a product policy for the enterprise. This is utilized in guiding the generation of product (project) proposals, resulting in a product/project portfolio, suitable to be carried out as product development projects in the enterprise. In the next part of the course the product development process is elaborated upon. Focus is set on the conceptual development phase, but also on the subsequent phases of the process. The theoretical part of the course starts up by offering lectures on Product planning/Product renewal in close collaboration with an industrial enterprise. Alternatively a virtual enterprise might be used, in order to emphasize the industrial context in the project. The actual development work is carried out in groups of 3 - 5 students per group. In the second part of the project, focusing on the conceptual design, but also on the additional phases of the product development process, including product architecture, embodiment design and detail design activities. The product development is a direct continuation of a project in the product portfolio derived from the previous Product planning/Product Renewal project. Each project is presented in the form of a project report and orally at a presentation for all of the participating companies.
