Kursen syftar till att ge förståelse för hur industriellt arbete byggs upp, fördelas och samordnas med särskild hänsyn till människans behov och villkor. Centralt i kursen är arbetets och det tekniska produktionssystemets utformning och ömsesidiga anpassning under samtidigt beaktande av betingelser för produktivitet och arbetstillfredsställelse. Till ämnet hör kombinationer av sociala och tekniska aspekter, dels vid förändringar i befintliga produktionssystem, dels vid utformning av nya. Kursen ger speciellt förståelse för villkoren vid genomförande av förändringar i arbetsorganisationer och vilka krav detta ställer på ledarskap.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Define and discuss basic concepts about structure, distribution and organisation of work.

• Explain the design of work and production systems and the relation to work satisfaction and productivity.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

Design a set-up for improvements activities in existing as well as future production systems.

Visualise and present a specific subject within the field of work organisation.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Suggest and motivate changes in an existing work organisation using basic concepts and principles within the field of work organisation.


The course starts with an historic review and explanations of fundamental theories and explanation models, followed by a written test. The students are organised in teams and summarize relevant work organisation areas in articles and posters and present these in seminars. Cases will be analysed in cooperation with industrial representatives. Researchers will interact with students and explain trends in work organisation theory and practice. Key words of the course: work organisation, management, participation, changes and improvements, innovation, organisational psychology, work organisation and productivity, stress and workload in working life, examples from industry, latest research.

Assessment: For a passing grade the student must actively participate in the obligatory portions as well as receive a passing grade on a project as well as on a written test.
