Contents

The course treats two main areas are:

Thermodynamics:

Basic concepts of thermodynamics such as work and heat, entropy, enthalpy, free energy and chemical potential.

Equations of state for gases.

Calculations on reversible, irreversible and adiabatic processes.

Quantitative treatment of phase equilibrium in systems of one component.

Quantitative calculations of the relations between pressure, temperature and composition in non-ideal systems of two components with one or more phases. This includes concepts such as partial molar quantities and activity, calculations of colligative properties and a thermodynamic description of distillation.

Thermodynamic treatment of chemical equilibrium.

Surface chemistry:

The interfaces between a liquid phase and a gas. The surface tension and different experimental methodes to determine the surface tension of a solution. Gibbs adsorption isotherm. Kelvin equation.

Surfactants. Micelles; methodes to determine the critical micellar concentration (cmc). Liquid crystalline phases. Solubilisation.

Solid surfaces. Adsorption and wetting

Charged surfaces; the DLVO-theory.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH
Assessment: The final grade is based on a weighted average of the result achieved on the exam in thermodynamics (75 %) and the home assignments in Surface Chemistry (25 %). In order to pass the course, the student has to pass each of the different course components (laboratory experiments, home assignments and exam).

Parts
Code: 0113. Name: Examination in Thermodynamics.
Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: For passing grade, 50 % of the maximum is required. Contents: Written exam in thermodynamics. The result contributes 75 % to the final grade.
Code: 0213. Name: Home Assignments in Surface Chemistry.
Credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: For passing grade, it is required that the student reach 51% of the total points on both assignments. Contents: There are two mandatory home assignments on the course that contribute in total 25% to the final grade.
Code: 0313. Name: Laboratory Experiments.
Credits: 0. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: The tasks are presented either as a written report or orally. For passing grade, the written report should be simple but correct and to the point. They should also have a proper structure and contain a relevant discussion. Contents: Four laboratory experiments that demonstrate important thermodynamical concepts.
