Aim

The course extends the material covered in the basic course in Solid State Physics/Electronic Materials/Device Physics to provide a broader and deeper understanding of semiconductor physics which is essential for applications. It also develops the basic physical principles that are needed to understand semiconductor devices and their operation, including their role in simple electronic applications.

Contents

Physics of semiconductors: bandstructure, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, charge carrier concentrations and transport phenomena.
Generation, recombination, injection and transport of non-equilibrium carriers.
Surface states.
Electrical properties of components such as the pn junction, the bipolar transistor, metal-semiconductor junction.
MOSFET: basic properties and various implementations of MOS-structures

Assessment: Home assignments, laboratory exercises and oral examination.

Required prior knowledge: Basic solid state physics including introduction to semiconductors and the pn-junction equivalent to Solid State Physics (FFFF05), Electronic Materials (FFFF01) or Physics of Devices (ESS030).
