General Information

Main field: Technology.
Compulsory for: BME3
Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand

Aim

To acquire specific knowledge on materials concerning the design parameters to select materials to be used in contact with living tissue – biomaterials. To understand the processes that govern the interactions over the interface between the material and the living tissue. To understand the process that is needed to develop a new biomaterial or medical device. To have knowledge of the rules that govern medical products in Europe and other parts of the world.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

To achieve pass level the student shall
Be able to discuss the design factors and mechanisms that direct the development of new biomaterials and devices and the alternatives for testing them at various levels – in vitro, in cell cultures, in animal experiments and in the clinics.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Understand the ethical issues in the development of new biomaterials.

Contents

The class is given as lectures with 1-2 group assignments to bring a concept to a finished clinical medical device. The lectures will encompass material science and characterization and testing of biomaterials. Processes at the interface between material and living tissue. Ethics, clinical evaluation, legal requirements on medical devices. Examples on clinical uses of Biomaterials in orthopedics, odontology, the cardiovascular system, ophthalmology, audiology etc.
