Aim

The course is a supplementary course to RF Amplifier Design (??048) where you gain a comprehensive experience of the profession as radio frequency designer. The project may typically consist of a minor part of a radio receiver. The goal is to get understanding of the relation between the calculations and the realisation of electronic circuits in the frequency range megahertz to gigahertz. Measurements with spectrum and network analysers at high frequencies show that the components not always behave as expected. The know-how to master this makes the course both useful and exciting.

Contents

In contrast to ordinary laboratory exercises, where the tasks mostly relate to a particular section in the textbook, you will take the responsibility for all of the phases in the design work. When the specification is stipulated, suitable components must be selected in order to make a realizable design. After reasonable component values have been calculated and a layout is drawn, a printed circuit board is fabricated. Finally the prototype must be verified. This can comprise the use of advanced measurements with spectrum and network analysers or noise figure meter.

Type of teaching
Project work at small groups in the Radio Laboratory. Specialist guidance is offered at set times. Seminars or guest lectures may be presented during the course, covering subjects of special interest in the radio electronics field but also presentation techniques.

The project is presented in a comprehensive written report and in an oral presentation to the other participants in the course.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG
Assessment: Passed project work, oral presentation and written report. Examination is given only once a year after the course.
