Aim

OFDM is one of the main techniques in modern telecommunications used in numerous systems (WLAN, xDSL, DVB, DAB, DRM, beyond-3G mobile communication, etc.). This course presents the basics of multicarrier communciations and introduces some important systems based on OFDM. Along the way, important principles of advanced communications techniques are introduced and illustrated.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• understand the underlying principles of multicarrier modulation
• understand and apply the elementary ideas regarding the design of advanced communication systems introduced in the course

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• formulate, analyse and assess the complexity of problems in modern communication systems
• have a perspective regarding the challenges in a modern communication system

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• understand and apply the principles of multicarrier modulation

Contents

The course provides fundamental knowledge about modern algorithms for high data rate communications systems with a strong focus on multicarrier systems. The topics covered by the course are:

• why multicarrier?
• mathematical description of a multicarrier system
• choice of orthogonal basis functions
• information theoretic aspects: channel capcity, waterfilling
• channel estimation and channel equalization for multicarrier
• synchronization and coding issues
• existing/emerging multicarrier systems and standards: DVB-T, >3G, WLAN, ADSL, VDSL, DRM

The primary tool for calculations during exercises and labs is MATLAB.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH
Assessment: Alternatively to a written exam (5 hours), a home exam may be scheduled. Successful completion of lab and homework is a prerequisite for taking the exam.

Admission requirements:

• EITF15 Signal Processing - Theory and Applications or ESS040 Systems and Signals or ETI265 Signal Processing in Multimedia

Required prior knowledge: ETT051 Digital Communication.
