Aim

The course aims to increase the student’s ability to reflect on different sorts of interior furnishings and the design of furniture. This is done by training him or her to work with models of different interior spaces and re-work and make ready an item of furniture he or she has designed or re-worked. He or she also discusses questions concerning theories of interior space and its furnishings and their role in our society/culture, with the aim of giving him or her possession of a conceptual apparatus that lets him or her actively and critically take part in contemporary debate about giving form to interior spaces and the design of furniture. The course also includes moments that regards exhibition design. A further aim is to introduce different concepts about interior space, its furnishings and furniture.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• With reference to a given space or item of furniture, whether or not he or she has designed either or both, define and identify questions concerning giving form to interior space and/or furniture and relate them to different contexts.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• From the point of view of a given space or item of furniture independently and simply to analyse critically, orally and in writing, with respect to the design of space and furniture in relation to the context in which they are placed

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Exhibit an ability to assess in a well-developed way different aspects of interior spaces and furniture.
• Be able to formulate meta-theoretical questions about the design of interior spaces and furniture.

Contents

The course includes a fundamental discussion of concepts and traditions that are central to the forming of interior space, its furnishings and furniture, which are reflected in practical work during the course. It also introduces concepts of interior space, its furnishings and furniture, mainly by reference to aspects affected by their designs and by practical exercises, but also from the aspect of how different societal and cultural conceptions of spaces and furniture affects our apprehension of them.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG
Assessment: The individual student can either Pass or Fail. To achieve the former he or she must hand in approved assignments. In addition he or she shall have at least an eighty per cent attendance at workshops and lectures.
