Aim
The course aims at providing practical skills in model-based
design and associated presentation techniques for the design
process early stages. The theory should provide insights about how
object models are organized to support Building Information
Modeling (BIM) and visualization.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- Be able to build an object based computer model of a multi
story building and understand how the building is represented in
the computer media.
- Be able to understand, explain and administrate an object based
computer model of a building concerning standard elements, library
objects layers, etc.
- Be able to use parametric and building related library objects,
like doors, windows, stairs etc.
- Be able to use an object based computer model to make images
and animated presentations (QuickTime VR) to present a
building.
- Be able to use an object based computer model to produce main
drawings, scale 1:100.
- Be able to use the material above for a sequential presentation
of the project.
- Have an overview of ”State of the Art” concerning model
based design and have knowledge of how to “update” this
knowledge.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- Be able to build an object based computer model of a multi
story building.
- Be able to use parametric and building related library objects,
like doors, windows, stairs etc.
- Be able to build library objects with the methods the program
offers.
- Be able to use geometrical data from an object based computer
model of a building for images and animation (QuickTime VR)
presentations of the building.
- Be able to use geometrical data from an object based computer
model of a building to make main drawings, scale 1:100.
- Be able use the material above for a sequential presentation of
the project.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- Be able to comment and discuss pros and cons based on own
experiences of model based vs. paper and pencils based design.
- Be able to reflect on how personal choice and priorities
influence the results of the exercise.
Contents
The course is run on distance over the Internet. Its main
activity for the student is to do and deliver twelve different
exercises. They are evaluated and commented by the course
coordinator. The include making a computer model of a two stories
building and:
- Administration of the model concerning standard element library
objects, libraries, layers etc.
- Visualisation of the building with images and animations
generated from the model.
- Generating traditional main drawings, scale 1:100, of the
building from the model.
- Design a presentation of the project on the computer.
- Studies of ”State of the Art” of model based design in
specific papers, available on the Internet.
- The exercises, instructions and information are described and
available at the Home Page on the Internet in the Luvit
Environment, which was designed at Lund University to be used for
distance courses.

Grading scale: UG
Assessment: 100 % passed tutorials.

Required prior knowledge: Second year in Byggteknik med arkitektur.

Reading list
- At the course home page (LUVIT) basic theory is found, as well as links to external information sources on the web. The course requires the participants to study web-based material like software manuals and tutorials in order to solve practical exercises according to problem based learning. In addition are the students asked to study and comment on relevant theory, based on three academic papers. This theory should provide a deeper understanding of ongoing research and development in the fields of design methodology, CAAD or BIM. These papers may be presented in either of the annual conferences of eCAADe, CaadFutures, ACADIA, CADRIA or SIGRADI, (organizations in different parts of the World with interest in CAAD).
