Aim

The course aims at giving students understanding and basic knowledge and ability to discuss qualities of Scandinavian urban architecture.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• have an understanding of how new architecture is built in the Scandinavian urban environment and analyze architectonical and urbanistic qualities.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• show evidence of critical thinking
• explore, understand and review functional, technical and estetic qualities

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• have an ability to evaluate existing preconditions and preservation qualities in relation to demands for renewal and architectural quality.

Contents

Emphasing 20 and 21th-century urbanism, the course comprises lectures and seminars, as well as excursions in Denmark and Sweden. It mediates knowledge, training and understanding of giving form to the encounter between new and old urban architecture and focuses in particular on the functions, construction, material, administration and renewal of buildings. Training is given in how buildings are adapted to contemporary demands on functions, technical equipment, form and access by the physically handicapped.

Grading scale: UG
Assessment: During the course, constant reference is made to individuals’ levels of knowledge: each gives a preliminary account of his or her work-in-process on a project that is assessed. At the end of the course, each gives in words, drawings and images a final account of this project that the other students assess critically. Successfully to complete the course, a student must attend not less than eighty per cent of the lectures and study visits; actively take part in preliminary and final assessments; and gain approval for his or her project.

Admission requirements:

• At least three years approved full time education at university level (or a Bachelor degree) in architecture, landscape architecture, spatial planning or urban design, or equivalent
