Aim

The aim of the course is to give the basic knowledge of solid mechanics with applications to everyday engineering problems. The project aims to increase the ability to design and analyse a structure in reality.

Contents

The following subjects are dealt with in the course: Stress and strain analyses, mainly the state of plain stress. The three simple loadcases; uniaxial traction force, torque and bending moments applied to straight bars. Statically indeterminate beams. Fatigue. Rheological models. In connection to the different subjects some applications are shown such as pressure vessels, natural vibrations and critical speeds. The course also includes some laboratory experiments.

Assessment: A compulsory laboratory experiment. A written examination at the end of the course.

Required prior knowledge: FMA430 Calculus in Several Variables, FMEA10 Engineering Mechanics, Basic Course.
