Course syllabus
Decentraliserad vatten- och avloppsvattenhantering
Decentralized Water and Wastewater Treatment
VVAN01, 7,5 credits, A (Second Cycle)
Valid for: 2012/13
Decided by: Education Board 2
Date of Decision: 2012-04-04
General Information
Main field: Water Resources.
Elective for: MWLU1, V4-vr, W4-vr
Language of instruction: The course will be given in English
Aim
The student shall within the limits of the course enter deep
into the subject of decentralized water transport and treatment.
The student shall be able to choose appropriate technique after
local conditions in developing as well as developed countries and
dimension and plan the operation of facilities for drinking-water,
wastewater and storm-water treatment.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to independently analyse and value parameters
influencing the function and efficiency of treatment processes and
chains of transport in decentralized systems.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to choose and dimension processes for wastewater
treatment, drinking-water treatment and storm-water handling in
decentralized systems based on given prerequisites.
- be able to evaluate systems for decentralized drinking-water
treatment, wastewater treatment and storm-water handling.
- be able to give an advanced oral account in English of a given
task in front of a larger audience.
- be able to write larger technical reports and summarizing
“articles” in English, possible for persons within the branch
to understand. The students shall also be able to critically
examine articles.
- be able to independently collect and compile relevant
information for choice and dimensioning of wastewater treatment,
drinking-water treatment and storm-water handling in decentralized
systems.
Contents
The course includes essential aspects on decentralized systems
for water and wastewater handling in developing as well as
developed countries. The course deals with the following areas of
knowledge:
- Survey of water resources, water consumption and water quality
in decentralized systems.
- Simple processes for production of potable water.
- Storage and distribution of potable water in small-scale
systems.
- Local handling and treatment of storm-water.
- Decentralized wastewater systems.
- Physical, chemical and biological treatment processes applied
at small-scale systems.
- Re-use of wastewater and storm-water.
- Handling of rest products in decentralized systems.
- Quality control in small-scale systems.
