Date of Decision: 2012-04-04

General Information

Main field: Technology.
Compulsory for: B2, K2
Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish

Aim

The aim is to give basic knowledge of the physical-chemical basis for different separation methods and to apply these for selection and design of industrial separation processes

Learning outcomes

Contents

The course deals with with various methods for separation of compounds in gases, liquids or solids materials

The following issues are treated:
The physical-chemical principles for the following separation processes: Filtration, Membrane Processes, Adsorption, Chromatography, Ion Exchange, Evaporation, Drying, Crystallisation, Extraction, Leaching, Absorption and Distillation. For some of these only the principles are treated while some selected are treated more in detail.

Principles for selection of separation process:
Which separation processes that are used today. Examples will be given from chemical and biotechnical process industry and from the environmental sector.
Methods for determination of important design parameters, such as purity, yield, energy demand etc for the following separation methods: filtration, membrane filtration, evaporation, distillation, adsorption/chromatography and drying.

Four project exercises treating different separation problems are performed to train the students in applying the acquired knowledge to separation problems in the chemical and biotechnical industry. Project 1 is presented both in written and orally and the other three in written.

Three laboratory studies focused on the design and handling of separation equipment and are related to calculation of the process performance

The engineering attitude to problem solving is stressed.
