The course is designed to
• provide an introduction to various kinds of handicraft in
the sense of ”serial manufacture of products by means of certain
production methods”,
• develop the creative ability of the student to realise an
idea,
• provide an introduction to product development work in a
specific market and
• provide insight into how a product, including its packaging,
affects all the earth’s systems during its life cycle.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
• have acquired an understanding of the possibilities and
limitations associated with different kinds of handicraft,
• have demonstrated an ability to carry out a minor product
development project,
• have shown an understanding of the marketing conditions
applying to a certain product in a certain market and
• have shown an understanding of how the product, including
its packaging, affects all the earth’s systems during its entire
life cycle.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
• demonstrate an ability to put her/his new knowledge into
practice by developing a product within a given time frame,
• have the ability to present the project orally in a seminar,
using graphics or visual aids and
• have the ability to describe the project in a written report,
where the design process and the final design solution is
presented.
• The course begins with a study tour, during which the
students acquaint themselves with the most common production
methods, e.g. injection moulding of plastics, metal casting,
compression moulding etc.
• The students are then given the opportunity to carry out a
minor product development project in which they train their ability
to take an idea all the way to finished physical product on a 1:1
scale.

Assessment: 80 % attendance required. The assessment is based on a project documentation and an oral presentation. If necessary a written self-evaluation.
