3D-modellering och rendering
3D modelling and Rendering

IDEA10, 5 credits, G1 (First Cycle)

Valid for: 2012/13
Decided by: Education Board 3
Date of Decision: 2012-04-13

General Information

Main field: Industrial Design.
Compulsory for: KID1, MD4
Language of instruction: The course might be given in English

Develop a basic understanding of the fundamentals of 3D surface modelling through learning and practicing the typical 3D surface modelling workflow.

Upon completion of the course, students shall be confident to independently translate their design intent with software into 3D form(s), including outputting data and computer generated images in order to present their results.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Have the ability to understand and practice the typical 3D surface modelling workflow:

- Software user interface, i.e. menus, windows, icons, hotkeys and folder structure
- The 3D worldspace; history and the principles of NURBS geometry, i.e. points, curves and surfaces
- Capturing the design intent by constructing and manipulating 3D curves through points in 3D worldspace
- Modelling of simple quality curves as prerequisite for simple quality surfaces
- Constructing and modifying surfaces to accurately describe objects through re-modelling one or two simple objects
- Rendering finished objects in a photorealistic manner through texturing and lighting; i.e. mapping of images and high dynamic range images
- Outputting basic data for use in other software and rapid prototyping equipment

The course consists of group lectures, complemented by individual supervision.
