Aim

The course aims to provide an overview of the history cities and urban planning - and furthermore, provide insights into the application of architectural theory as it relates to construction, conservation and regeneration. The aim is to provide students with an historical frame of reference with regard to the urban environment; which is intended to facilitate creative activities, and to promote discussion in a wider international context. As one in a series; this course will also seek to enhance the participant’s capacity to critically reflect on the rôle of architecture, and facilitate an analytical appreciation of the architectural profession. Students will also practice their ability to independently reason on the topics of architectural history and theory. Guest lecturers will investigate contemporary architecture and reflect upon the architectural profession.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

To be formally approved, the student must demonstrate that he/she:
• Is able to explain the main features of urban planning history.
• Is able to describe some basic methods of investigation, analysis and means of describing urban environments and other selected sites.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

To be formally approved, the student must demonstrate that he/she:
• Is able to master basic methods of investigation, analysis and description of urban environments and locations.
• Is able to write a text that describes and evaluates an architecture object or location.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

To be formally approved, the student must demonstrate that he/she:
• Is able to make assessments from specific architectural examples, which show an understanding and appreciation of the history of architecture and related theory.
• Is able to demonstrate an advanced understanding of the theoretical and historical context of architecture and the communication architectural ideas.

Contents

The course presents traditional architectural history seen in the light of; social, technological and cultural conditions. In addition, a number of key architectural theories in the history of Western architecture are presented. Guest lecturers will investigate contemporary architecture and reflect upon the architectural profession.

Grading scale: UG
Assessment: To be formally approved, the student must attain a passing grade in all exercises, and maintain not less than 80% attendance at tutorials and lectures.
