ROAD AND RAILWAY ENGINEERINGVTVA45
Credits: 7. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VTVA45 overlaps following cours/es: AAK630, VTVA20 and VVB620. Compulsory for: IBYI1, IBYV1. Course coordinator: Andreas Persson, Andreas.Persson@tft.lth.se and Ebrahim Parhamifar, Ebrahim.Parhamifar@tft.lth.se, Traffic and Roads. Assessment: Exam is in the form of oral and written accounts of the exercises. Further information: Kursen ges delvis vid Campus Helsingborg och delvis på Järnvägsskolan i Ängelholm. Aim
The course is intended to give the student fundamental knowledge of roads and railways with related technical systems and their functions over their whole existence, i.e. the connected phases of planning, construction, operation and maintenance.
GIS as a supporting feature in the planning process.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Describe the function and construction of flexible and rigid super structures on roads.

Analyze the interplay between horisontal and vertical alignement and its effects.

Describe the functions of the technical systems of the railway’s infrastructure.

Have fundamental knowledge of the possibilities for physical planning offered by GIS-analyses. Fundamental concepts of cartography and GIS.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Compile and evaluate relevant information, in a sustainable way, from different disciplins, with different perspectives while designing road alignment.

Carry out a simple dimensioning, according to Swedish standards, of both a flexible super structure and a railway structure.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Understand and respect the conflicts of interests that arise in connection with the road and railway project.

Contents
Orientation of planning and design of roads and railroads

Geometric design of roads and railways

Environmental issues

Dimensioning of road construction

Material tests. Bound and unbound material, ballast

Operation and maintenance of roads (and railways)

Structure and function of track substructure and superstructure and information about track geometric principles

Structure and function of signalling and telecommunication systems in the railway sector

How information in the database can be connected to the cartographic information, illustrated and analysed with the help of maps and geographic information systems. A GIS exercise with a practical application to the project is included.
