Syllabus academic year 2011/2012
(Created 2011-09-01.)
INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNIQUEVTVA01
Credits: 12. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VTVA01 overlaps following cours/es: VTT090 and VTT091. Compulsory for: L1. Course coordinator: Tomas Johansson, tomas.johansson@miljo.lth.se and Andreas Persson, anderaes.persson@tft.lth.se, Environmental and Energy Systems Studies. Assessment: Satisfactory written exam in the parts geology and infrastructure construction with water and wastewater treatment. Satisfactory project report. Participation in study trips. Satisfactory project tasks. The grading is based on the results of the exam, in which the parts are valued in proportion to the course. Parts: 3. Further information: Project work as an integration of the different disciplines. Home page: http://www.tft.lth.se.

Aim
Geology: to give basic knowledge in general and applied geology and hydrogeology to give a comprehension of how geologic preconditions may impact on building and construction questions.

Infrastructure construction and water and wastewater treatment: to give

basic knowledge on countryside roads: planning, projecting, building, engineering and maintenance;

basic knowledge on small scale water and wastewater constructions and wastewater treatment.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to describe the most common geological materials, especially the Swedish soil material, and their physical and technical characteristics like permeability and risk of frost damage.

Understand and describe how geological characteristics and preconditions may impact roads and other building constructions

Have some comprehension of how geological preconditions may impact other environmental problems like exploitation and natural resource and water resource preservation.

Comprehensively describe how private and public water and wastewater network are constructed and function.

Read and understand simple road project drawings.

Comprehensively describe construction and characteristics in a flexible road construction in the secondary road net.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to execute a geological conceptual model; i.e. read a geological map, draw a geological section with layer consequences and describe soil/rock in three dimensions and apply the model on land use assessment.

Assess appropriate road construction with regard to Swedish norms.

Comprehensively assess how road design impacts road users and environment.

Present a technical geological investigation in a written report.

Design and relocate a small wastewater construction.

Independently be able to seek information to solve specific problems within the subject.

Contents
The course has two parts:

Geology: Basic geology, especially different kind of soils in Sweden are presented. Emphasis is on “geological expectation model” and how to draw it up with help of a geological map and a section with layers. This is a material to assess land use concerning building technique, natural resources and ground water.

Infrastructure Construction: Three smaller projects are presented. Effects on the secondary road net in connection with a highway project; maintenance cost division; design of a smaller wastewater construction. Local preconditions shall be respected.

Literature
Kompendium i Teknisk geologi (http://connywww.tg.lth.se).
Kompendium i vägbyggnad.
Referenslitteratur: Ett kursbibliotek står till studenternas förfogande.
Svenska Språknämnden: Svenska skrivregler. Liber 2000.
Strömquist Siv Skrivboken. Gleerups 2002.
