Credits: 5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VGTF05 overlaps following cours/es: VGT601 and VVBF05. Assessment: The course examination comprises one hand-in task, a compulsary field measuring task and an final course exame. Aim
The course shall give an introduction to and basic knowledge in soil mechanics. The student shall knowledge for basic analysis and problem solving in the area of soil mechanics.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to explain and use basic concept and relations used in soil mechanics.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to apply soil mechanics knowledge in construction projects.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Understand the significance of and be able to asses a soil mechanics analysis, projecting or planning.

Contents
Construction geology. Soil materials knowledge. States of stress and strain. Testing methods used in field and laboratory. Failure criteria, Mohrs circle, stress vs strain equations. Foundation engineering: consolidation, load bearing capacity, support wall forces, land slide.
