COMPUTER BASED ENGINEERING, DESIGN OPTIMIZATIONMMKN15
Credits: 5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Optional for: M4pu. Course coordinator: Associate Professor Åke Burman, ake.burman@mkon.lth.se, Machine Design. Prerequisites: FHL064 Finite Element Method , MMK140 Computer Based Design Analysis 1 and MMK145 Computer Based Design Analysis 2 or equivalent course(s). Recommended prerequisits: MMK010 Manual and Computer Aided Drafting and FHLN01 Structural Optimization. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 16. Assessment: For a final passing grade the student must pass the two required problem-based individual assignments. The final grade is the average of the two assignment grades. Note that the assignments can be resubmitted with improvements if the student does not receive a passing grade the first time, but they will only be credited with the minimum number of points to pass - for the problem at hand.. Aim
This course aims to provide students with insight into how advanced computer aids can be utilized for analyzing products (primarely structural and fluid flow analyses) in order to optimizie products at different levels of concretization and complexity in the engineering design process. In the course such optimization methods are introduced which focus on singel phenomena as well as such suitable for complex combinations of phenomena. In the course computer based tools are introduced to handle the actual optimization

Contents
The course covers how a given design solution subjected to a singel or complex phenomena is given a mathematical formualtion (model), which in turn can be transformed into an optimization problem. Based on this formulation a suitable optimization method and tool is selected. The obtained result(s) is to be implemented into the given design solution. The design problems covered in the couurse ranges from simple components to complex products.
