PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN METHODOLOGYMMKF01
Credits: 5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. Compulsory for: M3, MD3. Course coordinator: Prof. Robert Bjärnemo, robert.bjarnemo@mkon.lth.se, Machine Design. Assessment: The course includes one compulsory project which is carried out in teams of 3-5 students. Approved projects earn a score between 13 and 25 points. All team members receive the same number of points earned on the projects. Aim
The course objective is to give the student basic knowledge of strategies, terminology and methods utilized in product development - including a short overview of product planning/product renewal. The course should also provide basic understanding of the engineering design process, in the form of procedures, methods and techniques utilized in the concept development phase of the product development process.

Contents
Based on an overall procedure model of the industrial development process, the course starts up by briefly introducing the product planning or alternatively the product renewal process.

In the next part of the course the product development process is elaborated upon in some detail. Focus is set on the conceptual development phase. After having introduced the theoretical development procedure a conceptual development project is carried out.

The project is, if possible, carried out in industry. Otherwise the project is carried out in the setting of a virtual company.

Higher education credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: The project is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. Approved projects earn a score between 10 and 20 points. All group members receive the same number of points earned on the projects. Contents: The product renewal project is, if possible, carried out in cooperation with an industrial enterprise. In this project, based on the business goal, an overhaul of the product assortment is initially carried out. This is followed by generating a number of product (project) proposals, a product portfolio, suitable to be carried out as product development projects in the enterprise.

Higher education credits: 2,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Written exam. Contents: The written examination covers the basic strategies, methods and techniques presented in the course.
