Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. KOO045 overlaps following cours/es: FFFN05. Compulsory for: K4m, N4m. Course coordinator: Professor Staffan Hansen, Staffan.Hansen@polymat.lth.se, Materials Chemistry. Recommended prerequisits: KOO101 Fundamental Chemistry, KOO022 Inorganic Chemistry, KOO052 Materials- and Polymer Technology. Assessment: Written final exam (gives the grade). Passed oral presentation. Passed project report. Home page: http://www.polymat.lth.se.

Aim
The course should give advanced knowledge in solid state structural chemistry and materials chemistry including relevant methods of characterisation and synthesis. The course should also deepen the knowledge of the relationship between atomic structure and the chemical and physical properties of a material.

Contents
The course covers the main areas; atomic structure in inorganic materials, methods for structural characterisation of crystalline materials, synthesis of crystalline materials, the relationship between atomic structure and physical properties. The course also covers description of defects in crystalline materials.

Project assignment: The structure of some inorganic materials is studied by means of graphical modelling in three dimensions together with practical model building. As a tool in the project work an international inorganic structural database and visualisation software is used. The project work is presented as a written report and an oral presentation.
