ORGANIC CHEMISTRYKOKA15
Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. KOKA15 overlaps following cours/es: KOK012, KOKA01, KOKA05 and KOKA10. Compulsory for: BME1. Course coordinator: Dr Daniel Strand, daniel.strand@organic.lu.se, Bioorganic Chemistry. Assessment: Written examination. For a passing grade the student must also pass the practical laboratory course part and pass in presentation of a literature project.

Aim
The course encompasses fundamental organic chemistry and structure of biomolecules for applications in medicine and technology.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

understand chemical formulas

and equations.

have a knowledge of, and the ability to describe, explain, and apply fundamental chemical concepts and terminology.

have a knowledge of, and the ability to qualitatively describe and apply simple concepts in chemical bonding and equilibria.

have a knowledge of the most common classes of organic compounds.

have a knowledge offundamental molecular orbital theory, thehybridization of the carbon atom, and the implications of hybridization theory for the structure and reactivity of organic molecules.

have a knowledge of the stereochemistry of organic compounds.

have a knowledge of the mechanisms for the most important organic reactions.

have a knowledge of the structure of polymers and biomolecules.

have an understanding of how structure and reactivity influences the function, stability, and reactivity of organic compounds in biological systems.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to value the stability and reactivity of simple organic molecules.

be able to value the acid-base properties of simple organic molecules and biomolecules.

be able to describe chemical reactions with the aid of chemical equations and mechanisms.

be able to judge the risks of chemical laboratory work.

master elementary laboratory techniques.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to present a critical reportbased on scientific articles, as well as to evaluate and give feedback to peer presentations.

Contents
The structure and reactivity of organic molecules with emphasis on an understanding of the most important properties such as chemical bonding, chemical equilibria, solubility, acid-base properties, and reactivity. Some fundamental reaction mechanisms with emphasis on transformations with relevance for biochemical processes. Simple experimental methods and risk evaluations of laboratory work.
