ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS STUDIES AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTFMIF10
Credits: 6. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. FMIF10 overlaps following cours/es: FMIF01, FMIF15, FMIF20 and GEMF01. Compulsory for: Pi3. Course coordinator: Charlotte Malmgren, charlotte.malmgren@miljo.lth.se, Environmental and Energy Systems Studies. Recommended prerequisits: Minimum 90 higher education credits within the program. Assessment: A written examination. A project and an assignment (individual or in small groups) are required. The first one is a literature study that analyses a relevant issue. It is presented in the form of a short scientific report, which is also discussed in a seminar. The second one comprises economic and/or technical calculations relevant to the contents of the course, that are to be accompanied by an independent critical evaluation. The project and assignment are presented and discussed in seminars. Participation in discussion seminars is mandatory. Parts: 2. Further information: Written exam in December. Aim
Many students will work in large companies, with activities or production on/for an international market. These positions entail a personal responsibility for, e.g., environmental and resource issues. In this context knowledge is essential, not only about current environmental and sustainability issues, but also about the societal framework and about methods used in industry, commerce and the public sector.

Contents
Description of society's supply of energy and natural resources and local and global environmental problems related to the processes of production, consumption/use and waste handling.

Limitation of resources related to the demands of modern society (non-renewable and renewable resources, conflicts over land use, etc.).

Critical appraisal of the concept of sustainable development. Introduction to a life cycle perspective on services and products.

Overview of environmental legislation in relation to the environmental issues and other policy instruments. Consequences for companies and organisations.

Methods used in organisations and companies.
