Aim
The objective of the course is to demonstrate the relationship between material, properties and manufacturing, and how this influences design and use of products of different materials.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be familiar with different types of materials and their processing
be aware of the relationships between structure and properties of materials.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

demonstrate the ability to analyse and discuss material problems and solutions.
demonstrate the ability to make a material selection for a product.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to discuss a material selection from different view points, e.g. technical, environmental, aesthetic, economical.

Contents
The course defines the relevant properties of construction materials, e.g. stiffness, plasticity, formability, optical properties, thermal properties, and how these properties depend on structure. Different types of materials and manufacturing processes are used as base for the discussion.
