Syllabus academic year 2011/2012
(Created 2011-09-01.)
Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. FFFF05 overlaps following cours/es: FFF100 and FFFF01. Compulsory for: F3. Course coordinator: Carina Fasth,, Department of Physics. Recommended prerequisits: FAFF10 Atomic and Nuclear Physics with Applications. Assessment: Written examination and completed laboratory exercises and computer exercise. Parts: 2. Home page:

The course uses concepts from electromagnetic field theory, quantum mechanics and atomic physics. The origin of the electronic structure of solids is discussed based on theories developed in previous courses. Emphasis is on the bandstructure and electrical properies of semiconductors, which naturally leads to the introduction of the pn junction. Transistors are briefly discussed. The course syllabus also includes an overview of optical and magnetical properties of solids. Concepts treated in the course are relevant for instance in the rapidly developing fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is illustrated throughout the course.
