ADVANCED TELECOMMUNICATION

ETSN01

Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. ETSN01 overlaps following cours/es: ETS190. Compulsory for: MWIR1. Optional for: C4, C4ks, D4, D4ks, E3, E3ks, I4, I4pvs. Course coordinator: Professor Ulf Körner, ulf.korner@eit.lth.se, Electrical and Information Technology. Recommended prerequisits: Basic knowledge in communication systems corresponding to ETS052 Computer Communication or ETS150 Data Communication. Assessment: The course assessment is divided in two sections, a written exam and a project assignment. Aim
The course gives a deep understanding and solid knowledge about the design of advanced systems for wireless communication, regarding both public systems (GSM, W-CDMA, LTE) and wireless local networks (WLAN, Bluetooth, Ad-Hoc, and mesh networks). The students also get hands-on experience of implementing services in a mobile terminal.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to account for the principles of mobile telephony systems and their function.
demonstrate understanding for why the systems are designed as they are
be able to account for the mobile telephony systems connections to public switched telephone networks and to data communication networks such as Internet.
be able to account for principles for and design of mobile and wireless data communication systems.
be able to account for principles and functions of subsystems in the above mentioned systems.
be able to account for principles for setting up connections and sessions between communicating mobile units.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

show ability to utilize deep technical or scientific information within the course's field of knowledge and to report on this in a comprehensible and satisfactory manner.
show ability to implement functions or services in a given mobile system.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to value advantages and drawbacks with different solutions in mobile and wireless communication systems when compared to each other.
be able to value and compile information on phenomena and occurrences within the subject field.

Contents
The course gives a deep understanding of principles and technologies that are the foundation of mobile communication systems. The course covers both public systems (GSM, W-CDMA, LTE) and technologies for wireless local networks (WLAN, Ad-Hoc, and mesh networks). The course also gives an understanding of how these systems integrate more and more, advantages and disadvantages as well as problems and their solutions in connection with this integration.

The course is divided into two sections:

Theoretical studies of the second and third generation mobile communication systems, wireless networks also called WLANs, and an introduction to mobile systems beyond 3G.
Implementation of services in mobile systems.

Principles for and design of mobile telephone systems like GSM, GPRS, W-CDMA, LTE
Principles for and design of WLAN systems like 802.11, HyperLAN
Ad-Hoc and mesh networks
Principles for and design of radio based local communication systems like Bluetooth
Future systems for mobile and wireless communication.
