ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IAAHN02
Credits: 15. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Architecture. Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. AAHN02 overlaps following cours/es: AAHN01. Optional for: A4. Course coordinator: Professor Christer Malmström, christer.malmstrom@arkitektur.lth.se, Architecture. Prerequisites: At least three years approved full time education at university level (or a Bachelor degree) in architecture, or equivalent. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 10. The number of participants is limited to 30 Selection criteria: Relevance in studied courses, credits and the composition of the group (in this order). Assessment: Approved assignment tasks, approved examination project and and at least 80% active attendance at seminars, visits and lectures. Compulsory attendance at reviews. The qualities of the project assignment and presentation are evaluated and dicussed by an examination team comprised of the course examiner, lecturers and external critics after which the examiner decides if the project is considered to fulfil the requirements for a pass. In the case of non-pass the student has the right to a new examination opportunity after any necessary amendment or re-formulation of the project. The examiner informs the student as to what is required in order to achieve a pass. Further information: The course “Integrated design: Architectural Design – Structural Design” is obligatory associated to this course. As a complement “Architecture in Material and Detail I” is recommended. “Advanced Architectural Design I” differs from “Advanced Architectural Design II” through its thematic content.

Aim
The aim of the course is to support the students’ ability to experimentally explore the potential of architecture through the design of a building / buildings in a context related to site and society. Exercises of artistic character confronts both the tools of design as well as the potentials and limitations of building techniques. The course shall provide ability to students´ to challenge existing paradigms within architecture out from future related aspects.

Contents
The aim of the course is to provide students´ the tools to develop a future related architecture through an experimental and laboratory way of working. Hypothesis is tried out and examined in respect to the results in a cyclic procedure where only the final aim is known. A continuous evaluation leads the design process further on. Close interaction with other and adjacent disciplines are included. Internationally recognized competence participates in crucial moments. Teaching is given in the form of projects were the outcomes are discussed in its theoretical and practical aspects. The relation between architecture and architects, engineers and entrepreneurs potential to realize the result is examined. Instructions are given concerning the practical application of knowledge in the architectural design. Teaching is based on exercises executed individually and in groups, through seminars, lectures, visits and tutorial reviews. In parallel literature studies is carried out.

Literature
Course compendium and supplementary literature, the contents of which vary according to the chosen theme of the year.
