Aim
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge of statistics and tools for formulating and analysing problems in the areas of traffic and construction.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Have knowledge of a number of basic distributions within the areas of traffic and construction

Be able to describe what it means to falsify, or not being able to falsify, a hypotheses

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

From a problem description be able to structure the problem, construct relevant hypotheses and test them

Be able to implement basic regression models

Be able to use Excel for compiling, describe and analyse data

Contents
The course aims at giving an introduction to probabilities and mathematical statistics with a special focus on the areas of traffic and construction. The curricula contains, among other things, the following:

· Introduction to the theory of science. What is knowledge? How do we know what we know, and what we don’t know and how probable is it?

· Structuring of problems and formulation of hypotheses, the art of formulating a problem. Systematic vs. Stochastic variation. Correlation vs. causality. Significance.

· Different types of distributions in the areas of traffic and construction: Discreet, Normal, Poisson.

· Selection.

· Descriptive statistics and tools for analysis: frequency tables, diagrams, point estimates, disoersion, t-test, basic regression models.

Within this course we primarily use Microsoft Excel as a tool for compiling, analysing and presenting data.
