SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTIONVTVA05
Credits: 12. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VTVA05 overlaps following cours/es: VTT090 and VTT091. Compulsory for: L1. Course coordinator: Per Svenningsson, per.svenningsson@miljo.lth.se and Elisabeth Kjellsson, Elisabeth.Kjellsson@byggtek.lth.se, Traffic Planning and Engineering. Assessment: Satisfactory written exam in both parts, building construction and environmental knowledge. Satisfactory project tasks. Participation in study trips. The grading is based on the results of the exam. Parts: 3.

Aim
Building construction: fundamental skills in building and installation construction, taking into consideration the energy effect, damp proofing and sound building structure.

Environmental science: fundamental scientific knowledge of important environmental problems. The students will also be given an orientation in how environmental problems are defined and dealt with in society.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Have good knowledge of the most common building and installation construction systems from different time epochs.

Understand fundamental physical building phenomena.

Have fundamental knowledge of the scientific mechanisms behind important environmental problems such as greenhouse effects, acidification and ground-level ozone.

Have overall knowledge of central environmental tools, for example LCA och EIA, and be able to relate these to actual projects.

Have overall knowledge of how society regulates environmental problems; i.e. the principles of legislation, permits/supervision and policy instruments.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Apply the acquired knowledge to identify and solve simpler physical building issues

Assess a building in terms of energy efficiency, damp proofing, inner climate and sustainability.

Identify the environmental issues that are relevant to the projects that concern land use in a wider sense.

Carry out overall analysis of environmental effects in connection with such projects and thereby be able to identify what further competence needs to be called on.

Independently collect information to help solve specific problems in relation to environment and construction.

Be able to describe more important environmental aspects of a given land use project in a written report.

Be able to orally communicate the contents of such a report

Contents
The course is divided into two sections:

The building construction section, which contains fundamental physical building construction and building and installation construction. Special importance is attached to energy-efficient measures, damp proofing, damage and indoor climate. The project task concerns the development of a land area where suitable house types and constructions can be suggested, taking into account land quality, energy consumption, material choice, damp proofing and lifecycle analysis.

The environmental science section, which contains important environmental issues relating to the national environmental goals and their significance for different sectors of the community: agriculture and forestry, energy supply, transport system, waste handling. The community and business sectors’ environmental efforts are related to the requirements of ,environmental legislation. The project task is an infrastructure project with extensive land use changes. The analysis includes environmental consequences in both the construction phase and the operation phase.
