STEEL AND TIMBER STRUCTURES

VBKN01

Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. VBKN01 overlaps following cours/es: VBK032 and VBK035. Optional for: V4hb, V4ko. Course coordinator: Tord Isaksson, tord.isaksson@kstr.lth.se, Structural Engineering. Prerequisites: VBK013 Structural Engineering. Recommended prerequisits: VBKF01 Structural Engineering - Building Systems, VSMF05 Engineering Modelling: Analysis of Structures. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 15. The number of participants is limited to 60 Selection criteria: 1.the course is part of the students specialisation 2.credits remaining for the degree 3.number of credits within VBK courses 4.filed of degree project 5.grades on VBK courses. Aim
The course shall give understanding and knowledge about the behaviour of advanced steel and timber structures, tools for modelling and design and the ability to weigh pros and cons for different structural systems.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

understand the behaviour of steel and timber as a structural material as well as the behaviour of connections
be able to select the most suitable material for different structures and explain the pros and cons
be able to use relevant mechanical theories for practical applications for steel and timber

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to design steel and timber structures and connections
be able to find design solutions based on given conditions regarding end user demands
be able to present the assumptions being used in the design as well as present the results in writing and construction drawings
be able to use available design models in a constructive way and if necessary find and develop new models

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to assess different systems using a critical approach. Evaluate pros and cons for different design models and solutions regarding structural framework and the overall design of the structure
be able to critically assess existing structures using gained knowledge and available information

Contents
The course includes the following parts:

instability of members (buckling of straight members, lateral buckling of beams, flexural torsional buckling)
local buckling
straight and curved timber members
bending and shear
torsion
tension and compression members
bracing systems
design of details
design of weld, bolt and nail connections
composite members
fatigue
building systems

The ability to independently approach, solve and present one's work is trained by a major project task (travelling crane beam, bridges, multistorey buildings, large span structures)
