ENERGY UTILIZATION

MVKN20

Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. MVKN20 overlaps following cours/es: MVK061. Optional for: E4, E4em, F4, F4es, I4, M4en, W4, W4es. Course coordinator: Prof Jurek Pyrko, Jurek.Pyrko@energy.lth.se, Energy Sciences. Recommended prerequisits: MMVF01 Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics or equivalent course. Assessment: Both individual examination and examination based upon group performance. Compulsory assignments are presented and discussed in group seminars. The same applies to the compulsory industrial study tour. Participation in an energy political role-game is compulsory as well as four knowledge tests based upon the study course literature. Approved exercises are sufficient for final grade 3 "pass". Aim
The study course is intended to give knowledge about energy use in various sectors of society, its level, structure, development, and influencing factors as well as knowledge and application skill in methods and instruments for energy use analyses and forecasts.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to define important terms
be able to characterize the energy use in various sectors of society
be able to discuss important energy use dimensions such as level, energy carrier, quality requirements, duration, substitution possibilities, price sensitivity, etc
be able to relate contemporary national and international energy utilization to the historic development of society
be able to formulate a reasonably coherent personal argumentation around important questions and concepts related to energy utilization

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to carry out some energy measurents
be able to independently carry out a practical analysis of energy utilization or energy demand
be able to critically examine engineering/academic reports on energy utilization themes

Contents
Energy utilization in various sectors of society is characterized with respect to level, energy carrier, quality demands etc. The sustainablity of energy use, load/energy relations, substitution possibilities, synchronous load effects. Price level sensitivity of energy utilization. Forecasts and forecasting methods applied to various consumer groups. Practical analysis of energy demand and energy utilization.
