PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT

MTTN40

Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in English. MTTN40 overlaps following cours/es: MTTF20. Optional for: I4, I4lp, I4mf, M4lp, M4pu, MD4. Course coordinator: Annika Olsson, annika.olsson@plog.lth.se, Packaging Logistics. Recommended prerequisits: MTTF01 Logistics. Aim
The purpose with the course is to give students an overall view and understanding of packaging development and packaging systems and their role in society.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

evaluate and describe the packaging system for consumer packages considering the aspects of product requirements, user requirements, product safety, and environmental requirements
describe and understand the development process for integrated product and packaging development
describe and analyze the features of the most important packaging materials
describe the packaging functions in the different part of the packaging value chain
describe the sustainability requirements for the packaging system based on producer and user needs and return handling
relate and interpret the implications of a global perspective for packaging
describe and analyze the role of packaging in the sustainable society

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

identify product, market and environmental requirements, on the packaging system
suggest and evaluate different packaging materials at the design of packages
analyse the packaging system from product, user and environmental perspectives
evaluate and prioritise different packaging solutions from product, user and environmental perspectives
account for, both orally and written, the most suitable packaging solution based on a given practical case
develop a packaging prototype

Contents
The course is based on lectures and study visits with lecturers from the department and from industry. The lectures deal with packaging development for different product applications. Furthermore the lectures include areas as different packaging material, printing techniques, marketing aspects and environmental aspects. The major part of the course is based on project work, where the students should suggest and evaluate a packaging system for a consumer product, and make a package prototype.
