PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN METHODOLOGYMMKF05
Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course might be given in English. MMKF05 overlaps following cours/es: MMK040 and MMK110. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 16. Assessment: The course includes one compulsory project which is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. Approved project earning a score between 30 - 60 points. All group members receive the same number of points earned on the project. Aim
The course objective is to give the student basic knowledge of strategies, terminology and methods utilized in product planning / product renewal and product development. The course should also provide basic understanding of the engineering design process, in the form of procedures, methods and techniques utilized in systematic design work.

Contents
Based on an overall procedure model of the industrial development process, the product innovation process, the course starts up by introducing product planning or alternatively product renewal. Within this process it is explained how the industrial enterprise, based on the business goal, market survey(s) and an overhaul of the product assortment, formulates a product policy for the enterprise. This is utilized in guiding the generation of product (project) proposals, resulting in a product/project portfolio, suitable to be carried out as product development projects in the enterprise.

In the next part of the course the product development process is elaborated upon. Focus is set on the conceptual development phase.

The compulsory course project is, if possible, carried out in industry and covers both product renewal and product development ( only the Concept development phase).

Higher education credits: 4,5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: The project is carried out in groups of 3-5 students. Approved projects earning a score between 30 - 60 points. All group members receive the same number of points earned on the projects. Contents: The project is, if possible, carried out in cooperation with an industrial enterprise. Alternatively a fictive enterprise is utilized. The project begins with a product renewal project, which is aming at delivering a number products suitable to be developed within the enterprise. One of product proposals from the product renewal process is utilized as example within the subsequent product development process. In the product development process only the concept development phase is carried out.
