Aim
- to give an introduction to biotechnology and bioprocessing.
- to give information about biotechnological, food and pharmaceutical industry as well as current research.
- to give the foundation to engineering calculations.
- to introduce project work and group based learning.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- have a basic understanding of biotechnological production methods
- be able to describe the role of enzymes and microorganisms in a biotechnological process
- be able to calculate mass flows and energy requirements for simple biotechnological production systems
Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to draw simple flow schemes for biotechnological processes
- have a basic knowledge and skills in computational methods to be able to numerically solve biotechnological calculation problems
- be able to use computers, write reports, do oral presentations and to work in a project group
- be able to estimate and discuss environmental aspects of a biotechnological process
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to retrieve inforamtion from text books and scientific articles related to a biotechnological process
- be able to formulate and discuss questions concerning sustainable development in relation to production of biotechnological products such as food and pharmaceutical as well as other products

- project: raw materials, reactors, reactions, products, energy, environment and sustainable biotechnological production.

- computational methods: MatLab, numerical methods for linear equation systems, non-linear equations, integrals, non-linear equation systems and differential equations.
