SEPARATION PROCESSES, ADVANCED COURSEKAT051
Credits: 7,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: A (Second Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. Optional for: B4pt, K4p, W4p. Course coordinator: Prof Stig Stenström, stig.stenstrom@chemeng.lth.se, Chemical Engineering. Recommended prerequisits: KETF10 Separation Processes, Basic Course or KTE170 Mass Transfer Processes in Environmental Engineering. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 8. The number of participants is limited to 32 Selection criteria: Credits awarded or credited within the study programme. Assessment: Assessment by written examination at the end of the course and by written and oral presentations of a number of calculation and industrial problems. Parts: 2. Home page: http://www.chemeng.lth.se.

Aim
The aim with the course is to present a number of tools that will enable for the student to design industrial separation processes for production of chemical, biological and technical products with regard to productivity, product quality and energy efficiency.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

obtain detailed knowledge about transport phenomena and phase equilibria, how this will influence the design of different separation processes and how these processes should be optimally integrated with other components in an industrial process.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

Contents
The course is built around a number of themes, each one containing lectures, exercises, discussions in groups, compulsory calculations and computer exercises. In the course a number of industrial exercises are included.

Advanced studies take place in the areas transport phenomena, the analogy between momentum heat and mass and in phase equilibria. This fundamental knowledge is used to the design separation processes such as absorption, distillation, evaporation and drying. During industrial exercises in for example evaporation or drying the student acquires knowledge related to industrial problems and engineering practice, Special considerations are taken to environmental issues for the different separation processes.
