Aim
The aim of the course is to give the students a good and detailed understanding of the mechanical properties of polymer materials in relation to their structures and their forming and use under different conditions.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be aware of

the commonly used polymer materials and their applications
the structure-property correlations in polymers
the commonly used processes for forming polymers.

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

have the ability to characterize the structures of polymer materials using optical / scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing methods.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

have the ability to

choose independently various polymer materials for different applications
make oral and written presentations of polymer engineering fundamentals and processes.

Contents
Classification of Polymer Materials. Structures and properties of polymers. Crystallization, Viscoelasticity, Creep and Stress relaxation phenomena. Mechanical Testing methods. Materials characterization using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Deformation and forming methods. Applications and the current developmental trends. Environmental aspects and recycling.
