 SOLID MECHANICS, BASIC COURSE FHL105
Credits: 4,5. Grading scale: TH. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. FHL105 overlaps following cours/es: FHL013, FHL021, FHL055, FHL100, FHLA01, KTM013 and KTM041. Compulsory for: F2. Optional for: Pi4, Pi4bs. Aim
The aim of the course is to give the basic knowledge of solid mechanics with applications to everyday engineering problems.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to explain and use the concepts of stress and strain

• understand the importance of modelling the mechanical properties of the material to describe the relation between stress and strain

• be able to describe the phenomena principle stresses and principle strains

• be able to explain what happens in form of plasticity or fracture by overload

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to identify what loads a structure is subjected to

• be able to calculate the deformations and stresses caused by these loads

• be able to calculate when fracture occurs in a structure

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to estimate the risk of permanent deformations or fractures in the structure

Contents
The following subjects are dealt with in the course: Stress and strain analyses, mainly the state of plain stress. The three simple loadcases; uniaxial traction force, torque and bending moments applied to straight bars. Statically indeterminate beams. Fatigue. Rheological models.
