Contents
Introduction: Different information sources.

What is text, speech, music, pictures, and video? What is the advantage with digital signals compared to analog signals? Choosing between distortion free compression and compression with distortion. Analog/digital conversion, the sampling theorem, and quantization methods. Shannon's source coding theorem with and without distortion. Comparison of different quantization techniques.

Compression methods: Linear predictive coding. Different methods for compression based on linear orthogonal transforms (Karhunen-Loeve, Discrete Fourier, Fast Fourier, Discrete Cosine). Wavelets and filter banks.

Applications: Transform coding for pictures and video. The JPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 standards. Wavelet coding for pictures and JPEG-2000.
