Credits: 8. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: G1 (First Cycle). Main field: Technology. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. EDAA05 overlaps following cours/es: EDA021, EDA080, EDA250, EDA300 and EDA315. Compulsory for: D1. Course coordinator: Ass prof. A written examination after the first study period of the course. Aim
The aim of the course is to give an introduction to issues and problem areas encompassed by the Computer Science and Engineering program and to make it possible for students to understand how courses in the curriculum are connected. The course is also intended to introduce some of the different teaching and learning practices used in the program.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to give a perspicuous description of the field of Computer Science and Engineering
by simple examples be able to describe the role of Computer Science and Engineering in technical systems
be able to give an overview of the connections between different subjects in the field
be able to explain fundamental concepts covered by the course

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to profit from the teaching methods used within the program
be able to apply the knowledge gained by solving practical problems
be able to plan and implement a project work

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

feel motivated for continuing studies
be able to assume responsibility for her/his own learning process

Contents
The course gives an overwiew of Computer Science and Engineering and introduces some fundamental concepts in this area e.g., the binary numeral system, representation of characters in computers, fundamental logics, formal languages and communication systems. It also gives the students insight of how knowledge from basic courses are used in more advanced courses. This is achieved by examples from compiler constructon techiques, automatic control, data communication, real time systems and robotics, computer graphics and image analysis.

Literature
Course material will be made available by the department. A course book might be used. In that case it will be announced on the course web page at least one month before the course starts.

Higher education credits: 2. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: The exercises and laboratory sessions are compulsory. To qualify for a passing grade on the course these items must be completed.

Code: 0209. Name: Written Examination.
Higher education credits: 2. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: To qualify for a passing grade on the course the student must have a passing grade on the written examination.

Code: 0309. Name: Project Work.
Higher education credits: 4. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: A project work which is carried out in groups of approximately 4 students. To qualify for a passing grade on the course the project work must be completed.
