THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE CONTEMPORARY THEORIESATEF01
Credits: 6. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Architecture. Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand. Optional for: A4. Course coordinator: Univ.lecturer Mats Hultman,, mats.hultman@arkitektur.lth.se and professor Lars-Henrik Ståhl, lars-henrik.stahl@arkitektur.lth.se, Architecture and Built Environment. Prerequisites: Student must have completed Theory of Architecture A and B year 1 and 2 or equivalent. The course might be cancelled if the number of applicants is less than 10. Assessment: To pass the course the student must deliver the requested exercises and get them approved, actively participate in the seminars, and have attended a minimum of 80% of all lectures and seminars. Aim
The aim of the course is to enhance the students´ knowledge and counciousness of a number of contemporary architectural theories, as well as to give some insights of recent architectural research.

Contents
The course comprises a basic orientation of central concepts, traditions and lines of thinking in contemporary architectural theory and research. Fields that can be addressed are, e.g. design theory, semiotics, architectural philosophy, spatial analysis, aesthetics and urban morphology, as well as theories related to tracts and manifestos.

The course comprehends lectures, seminars, individual studies and written exercises. The student will be able to discuss theories and production of knowledge in seminars.The written exercises will enable the students to write and read in order to elaborate on issues of architectural knowledge and design. The seminars will be held in small groups, and the course aims at promoting the induvidual progress of each student.
