HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE IV - THE HISTORY OF ROMAN ARCHITECTURE

Credits: 3. Grading scale: UG. Cycle: G2 (First Cycle). Main field: Architecture. Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish. AHIF05 overlaps following cours/es: AHI010. Compulsory for: A3. Course coordinator: Assistant professor Anna-Maria Blennow, Anna-Maria.Blennow@arkitektur.lth.se, Architecture and Built Environment. Prerequisites: A Pass in the courses AHI011History of Architecture, AHI 021 History of Architecture II,and History of Architecture III or equivalent. Assessment: Attendance (80%) to lectures and participation in the study tour. Further information: The course is an advanced study of architectural history and contains a studytour to Italy. Aim
The main aim of the course is to give a deeper understanding of Rome´s fundamental importance for central Europe and Scandinavia.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

be able to explain, discuss and consider about the use of aesthetical principles in historic architecture
in an authentic environment be able to analyse and discuss these principles

Skills and abilities
For a passing grade the student must

be able to give an account of the signification of scale, time, rhythm, proportion and colour in architecture
under discussion be able to apply the aesthetical principles on the historical buildings during the study tour to Italy.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

be able to value the work of the most important historic architects in comparison to pupils and imitators.

Contents
The course starts with three lectures which gives the background to Rome´s historical and architectural development. They will be followed by a study tour to Italy.
